"Basic Training " Special Education Tutorial for Parents
|
"Basic Training" is a parent's key to understanding special
education law and how it effects their child's education.
The CD tutorial comes with an easy-to-follow manual and
workbook.
I call this tutorial "Basic Training" because it is very similar
to any physical workout that you might do. As in any
thorough physical workout, this tutorial is comprised of
three phases.
First, we have the "Stretch." During the "Stretch," flip
through your entire binder (workbook and manual). Get
familiar with the format of the text. Glance over key words
and concepts.
Second, we have the "Workout" itself. This involves the
75-minute CD enclosed in the binder. Listen to the CD and
follow along in your Student Workbook. The Workbook is
divided into three sections. The first section is entirely
about the federal law that governs special education. The
law is called the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act
(IDEA). The second section involves Individualized
Education Plans, or IEPs. Finally, the third section involves
Advocacy Strategies.
As you listen to the CD and follow along in your
Workbook, you will see that the Workbook has many blank
lines. When you get to a blank line, I will tell you what to
write - word for word. I will cue you that it is time to
write. The writing serves multiple purposes. First, it
reinforces what you are learning. Second, it will help you
recall concepts later. And finally, it will generate a
familiarity and confidence with the concepts.
Third, we have the "Cool Down." During the "Cool Down"
phase, thoroughly read your Manual. It follows the same
format as your Workbook. You will notice during this
phase that you are very comfortable with the topics
throughout the Manual.
Repeat the "Basic Training" tutorial as often as you feel is
necessary. I recommend doing the "Basic Training" tutorial
before each IEP meeting.
